SHELLSBURG AREA COMMUNITY GROUP > PAST PROJECTS
PRAIRIE FOREST TRAIL BRIDGE
December, 2019
With support and collaboration from the Shellsburg school, SACG sought a grant to replace the bridge leading to the restored prairie behind the school. Shellsburg elementary students use the prairie six to ten times a year for educational and recreational activities and the previous bridge crossing a waterway was deteriorating, high maintenance and sometimes unsafe. Grant and SACG funds were used to replace the bridge that can be used by students and to get the mowers out to the prairie. It's taller and stronger and will be easier to maintain. SACG members Jay Herman and Lonnie Speckner led the project, with other SACG members and community volunteers assisting. A sign near the school concession stands will be installed in the spring and plans are underway to promote trail events to area residents.
