CITY PARK FLOWER BED

A few years ago, Dan Pence, whose wife Joyce was once mayor-elect of Shellsburg, made a donation in her name to SACG, to be used for an appropriate project in one of the parks. Joyce passed away in 2011. The opportunity came when a funnel ball game was relocated from City Park to the elementary school, leaving a sizable bare spot, just ripe for a flower bed. Heather Sage, of Sage Advice Landscaping, provided a layout, the materials and some labor. SACG volunteers provided the mulch. Over time, as the plants grow and mature, Joyce's memorial will be the bright spot in City Park. Many thanks to Dan for providing the funds to create a loving memorial.
About Joyce Pence
Joyce Pence loved Shellsburg and was instrumental in many city projects. She was the co-founder of both the Shellsburg Area Community Group (SACG) and the weekly Farmer's Market in the park. She was certified as a Master Gardener at Iowa State University. In November, 2011, Joyce was elected mayor of Shellsburg. She died December 23, 2011, before having the opportunity to start her term.
