GOLF MEDAL FLOUR MURAL RESTORATION FUNDRAISER
June - December, 2023
The north wall of the Pearl Street Social Club building is home to a "ghost mural", which is the name given to hand-painted advertising signs that were popular many years ago. This one is for General Mills' Gold Medal Flour, and it was painted sometime around 1915. It has long been a goal of Shellsburg residents to restore the rough looking mural. SACG decided to make it a priority, so reached out to a qualified sign restoration company and received a bid. With a few additional expenses, the amount needed came in at $15,000. SACG reached out to General Mills but they were not interested in helping. SACG then searched for grant opportunities but found nothing suitable, so a community fund-raising effort was undertaken. SACG set up a GoFundMe page, created a marketing flier, and assembled a list of businesses and individuals to send it to. As of 11/20/23, just under $10,000 has been raised. SACG has committed to funding any shortfall and has given Pearl Street the go-ahead to do initial repairs to the wall, which need to be done prior to the restoration work. The mural should be restored in spring/summer of 2024.
