GOLF MEDAL FLOUR MURAL RESTORATION FUNDRAISER
June - December, 2023
The north wall of the Pearl Street Social Club building is home to a "ghost mural", which is the name given to hand-painted advertising signs that were popular many years ago. This one is for General Mills' Gold Medal Flour, and it was painted sometime around 1915. It has long been a goal of Shellsburg residents to restore the rough looking mural. SACG decided to make it a priority, so reached out to a qualified sign restoration company and received a bid. With a few additional expenses, the amount needed came in at $15,000. SACG reached out to General Mills but they were not interested in helping. SACG then searched for grant opportunities but found nothing suitable, so a community fund-raising effort was undertaken. SACG set up a GoFundMe page, created a marketing flier, and assembled a list of businesses and individuals to send it to. In addition, SACG worked with Millstream Brewing Co of Amana to produce a Shellsburg branded beer called Pacesetter, to be sold at local restaurants and retailers, with a portion of profits going to the mural fund. SACG raised just over $12,000. SACG committed to funding any shortfall, but a local sign artist offered his services for a little less, making any shortfall insignificant. Details on the actual restoration are here.
